Micro vs macro creators: which size suits an intimate brand?
Micro or macro creators? For intimate brands, audience control usually matters more than reach. Los Angeles rates by tier, what engagement data shows, and how to mix sizes in one campaign.
The short version
For intimate brands, the size of a creator matters less than how well you can see and control who watches. Micro creators usually give you a tighter, more trusting, more clearly adult audience for the money. Macro creators give you scale, with a broader audience that needs more checking. Many good campaigns use both.
What each tier costs in Los Angeles
| Tier | Followers | Estimated price per post |
|---|---|---|
| Nano | 1,000 to 10,000 | $50 to $250 |
| Micro | 10,000 to 100,000 | $250 to $1,500 |
| Mid-tier | 100,000 to 500,000 | $1,500 to $5,000 |
| Macro | 500,000 and up | $5,000 to $12,000 |
These are 2026 planning estimates for Los Angeles creators, not measured market data. Real quotes depend on engagement, usage rights and exclusivity, and creators may charge more for categories they consider sensitive.
What the engagement data shows
HypeAuditor's 2023 report found nano creators were the largest group on Instagram and TikTok and had the strongest audience connection, with average engagement of 2.78 percent on Instagram and 12.6 percent on TikTok. The same report found close to 60 percent of accounts with over a million followers were affected by fraud of some kind.
Older data, and averages across every category, but the pattern is consistent: smaller audiences tend to be more engaged, and larger ones need more checking.
Why size changes the risk
- Audience age. A creator with 20,000 followers built around one topic usually has a clearer age profile than one with two million from everywhere.
- Brand safety. Larger creators work with more brands, so conflicts and past controversies are more likely.
- Scrutiny. A big post about an intimate product draws more reports and more moderation attention.
- Cost of a miss. One macro post that underperforms is a bigger loss than one of six micro posts.
How to mix sizes
A sensible pattern: start with five or six micro creators to learn which messages and audiences respond, then book one larger creator for a launch, using what the micro round taught you. Keep UGC from the best micro creators for your own channels.
For roughly the price of one mid-tier post at the top of its range, you could book three or four micro creators at typical rates. That buys several audiences and several tests instead of one.

Questions brands ask
- What counts as a micro creator?
- Definitions vary, but a common split is nano at 1,000 to 10,000 followers, micro at 10,000 to 100,000, mid-tier at 100,000 to 500,000 and macro above that.
- Are macro creators ever right for intimate brands?
- Yes, for launches that need scale and where the creator's audience is clearly adult and the content can stay within platform rules. Check the audience age split with extra care, because large audiences are broader.
- How many micro creators equal one macro creator?
- There is no fixed ratio. Compare the cost of each option against the audience you actually want, not against total followers.
